Travel Hints & Tips
Practical pre-trip checks for UK travellers: what to do before you go, on arrival, and while in transit.

EES / EU Border — Entry/Exit System
The EU is introducing a new Entry/Exit System (EES) for non-EU nationals.
On your first entry to the Schengen area, you’ll be registered electronically instead of receiving a passport stamp.
Key points:
-
You’ll have your passport scanned and biometric data taken (photo and fingerprints in most cases).
-
Children under a certain age may only need a photo (rules vary).
-
The EES records your dates of entry and exit to enforce the 90/180-day rule.
-
There’s no pre-registration — the checks happen at the border.
Tip: Arrive with your passport ready and allow extra time during busy travel periods.
Travel & Health Insurance

Travel insurance is essential for all trips.
A GHIC or EHIC card can help with some medical costs in Europe, but it’s not a replacement for full travel insurance.

Check that your policy covers:

-
Medical care (including COVID), cancellations, and delays.
-
Pre-existing conditions and any planned activities (like skiing or diving).
-
Emergency evacuation if required.
-
Keep both printed and digital copies of your policy number and emergency contact details.
USA Entry (Including Transit)
Most travellers to the USA need an approved ESTA or a valid visa before boarding.
Even if you’re just changing planes in a US airport, you usually need travel authorisation.
Checklist:
-
Apply for ESTA online if you qualify under the Visa Waiver Program.
-
If not, apply for the correct visa through the US Embassy or Consulate.
-
Even for transits, authorisation is typically required — always double-check.
-
Keep digital or printed copies of your ESTA/visa and onward tickets.

IMPORTANT: Airlines may refuse boarding without valid US authorisation.
EHIC / GHIC

The UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) replaces the old EHIC for most UK travellers visiting EU countries.
Existing EHICs remain valid until their expiry date.
Remember:
-
GHIC/EHIC covers state-provided healthcare at reduced cost or free in many European countries.
-
It’s not a substitute for travel insurance.
-
Apply for a free GHIC via the official NHS website.
-
Check which countries accept GHIC/EHIC and what’s covered before travelling.
